9.1/10 CERTIFIED FRESH
On the first song and maybe even the best song on the EP, “Pulse”, begins with this gorgeous, repetitive, pulsing synth accompanied with what seems to be wind chimes. The song then develops as Shigeto introduces more digital samples that reflects his skill of experimenting with computer generated sounds. And altogether for seven minutes they sound like this beautiful, troubled adventure through an ambiguous world. The sample of a women continuously breathing creates this atmospheric and moody background as the listener finds themselves trying to figure out this paradox world of beauty and dismay.
The song, “Gently” is also very digital based and posesses an ambient techno type of composition. Here, you can definitely see that he was influenced by other Ghostly International Records artist and ambient techno musician, Tycho. The song has an atmospheric, pensive sound as if someone late at night happened to be standing on a dessert plain looking up above into infinite space. The song is the most ethereal cut on the album but it serves its purpose in linking Shigeto’s ambient influences with his more techno ones. In “Deep Breathing” you hear these deep gusts of wind sounds floating almost inconspicuously throughout the duration of the track. The digital samples come in over the gusts of wind serving as the forefront sample on the track, paralleling the gust of wind really well, making the listener feel as though they are being taking on a journey of perpetual transcendence.
Overall, the six track EP is one of the best of the year coming out of the electronic genre. You can tell Shigeto took his time with its composition and made sure there was a certain emotion that the listener could feel with each track. Also, what stands out about this EP is that Shigeto doesn’t try to make an underlying message, he just wants to make music that is personal and can evoke emotion regardless of what people think it means. This EP is incredible and supersedes all of what Shigeto has done before, he is really starting to truly understand his purpose in making diverse electronic music, and he is doing an magnificent job of it as well.
